Invite Hummus to the Breakfast Table

Hummus dips

We all know that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Eating a healthy breakfast provides you with the energy you need to stay alert and active throughout your busy morning. Oatmeal, cereal, toast, yogurt, fruit, eggs – these are all great options, but you get tired of having the same old thing. Remember, there are no rules when it comes to breakfast. Just like society has come to embrace the concept of “Brinner” (breakfast for dinner), we can also find ways to switch up other meal-specific foods to make our first meal of the day more exciting. After all, isn’t toast with jam just half of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich?

Pita chips and hummus dips have become a popular pairing at parties and as afternoon snacks. Though traditionally a Middle Eastern recipe, hummus has made its way across the globe and into the hearts and stomachs of Westerners. In fact, Canada is among the top 5 exporters of chickpeas in the world, and you can’t have hummus without chickpeas! Hummus is not just tasty, it has health benefits as well, which is precisely what we’re looking for in a breakfast dish. For vegetarians who generally don’t get enough protein in their diet, hummus is a smart addition. According to Canada’s Food Guide, three-fourths of a cup of hummus is considered the equivalent of one serving of meat. It is also rich in folate, which has been associated with lowering a person’s risk of some cancers and heart disease.

Other than dips and spreads for pita chips, what are some other uses for hummus spread? Let’s consider introducing hummus to some of our favorite breakfast dishes.

Recipes and Uses for Hummus Spread at Breakfast

  1. Toast with Hummus and Veggies: It’s that simple! Cucumbers and radishes are great toast-toppers to pair with hummus. If you don’t like the idea of raw vegetables in the morning, apple slices are a sweeter alternative.
  2. Hummus Breakfast Wrap: Scrambled eggs, plus hummus, plus some veggies of your choice, all wrapped up in a tortilla.
  3. Hummus, Tomato, and Feta Omelet: Just fold a layer of hummus inside your omelet, and add diced tomatoes and crumbled Feta to give your dish more of a Mediterranean feel.
